LITERACY THROUGH HISTORY

Inspiring Students Through Reading

RCSA Elementary welcomed Jacksonville’s First Lady, Mrs. Molly Curry, for a memorable reading experience designed to connect literacy with important figures in science and history.

Her visit also helped launch the school’s Book Marathon, encouraging students to read enough pages collectively to complete the equivalent of 26.5 miles.

A SPECIAL SCHOOL VISIT

Celebrating Literacy, Leadership, and Discovery

Wednesday, January 25th was an extraordinary day at River City Science Academy Elementary. As part of its Literacy through History initiative, RCSA Elementary has invited Jacksonville’s First Lady, Mrs. Molly Curry, to read to their students about important leaders in history that made paramount advances in science. We used also Mrs. Curry’s visit to kick off our Book Marathon challenging the students of RCSAES to enough pages to extend 26.5 miles.

First Lady Curry will start by reading The Tree Lady, by Joseph Hopkins, to RCSA’s primary students about Kate Session, an American botanist, horticulturalist, and landscape architect, who is known as the “Mother of Balboa Park” because of her work in San Diego, California.
First Lady Curry read to RCSA’s intermediate students Maria Curie: Prize-Winning Scientist, by Lori Mortensen, which is about the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize for Physics.
RCSA believes that this reading initiative is significant, as it is a means to motivate students to read about noteworthy people and events in history that have made impacts on us today. They were incredibly grateful to have the First Lady of Jacksonville help them spread this message.

During their visit, they were invited to a session of the House of Representatives where they were recognized for the great efforts and accomplishments of our School. Representative Rep Lake Ray, Rep Reggie Fullwood-, Rep Ronald "Doc" Renuart, Rep Daniel Davis, Rep Janet Adkins, Rep Mia Jones , Rep Charles McBurney called them out and they stood so the other Representatives could see them and show their support with their hand claps.

Our thanks go out to Mr. Sel, Ms. Copeland and Mr. Serdar for sponsoring this visit to our State’s Capitol.

Reading That Connects Students with History

Literacy experiences like this help students build knowledge, curiosity, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for the people whose ideas and achievements have shaped the world.

Thank You for Supporting RCSA Readers

RCSA Elementary extends its sincere appreciation to Mrs. Molly Curry for sharing her time with students and helping promote the importance of reading, lifelong learning, and educational opportunity.
